GUARDIAN: a lot of pride and joy

The Guardian article titled “A lot of pride and joy”: the First Nations team representing Australia at the Venice Biennale of Architecture, published on May 10, 2025, highlights a historic moment for Australian architecture. For the first time, an all-Indigenous team, known as The Creative Sphere, is representing Australia at the Venice Architecture Biennale.

Their installation, Home, is a 4.8 by 9-meter rammed-earth structure constructed from sustainable, locally sourced materials such as clay, plaster, and plywood from the Veneto region. The design emphasizes Indigenous perspectives on architecture and a deep connection to Country. It features 139 hand-cast plaster panels and was assembled using natural techniques, reflecting community and cultural resilience.

The project invites visitors to engage physically and emotionally, encouraging them to leave footprints in the sand or traces in ochre or clay, fostering a personal interpretation of "home." This participatory approach aims to promote cultural generosity and joy as acts of resistance, especially in the context of the 2023 voice referendum defeat.

Home will be dismantled at the conclusion of the Biennale, with materials returned to their origins, upholding its sustainable ethos. The Guardian
